how to succeed in

The Interview

The Personal Interview is the key moment in the selection process. Usually, several interviews take place with different people (the Headhunter first, then the HR representative, the Hiring Manager, the head of the area, … Each company has its own selection process and practices. Any way, whether there are more or less interviews in the process, remember that they are all important. They are a filter and, as such, you must carry them out with the same excellence behaviour and enthusiasm.
Today, interviews can be face-to-face or virtual. Whatever the format, the same rules, which we propose below, apply.

Before the interview

la entrevista - valor

BE CLEAR ON THE VALUE YOU CAN ADD

Reflect on how you can contribute to the position you are applying for. What are your strengths, where do you have a competitive advantage that can make your application better than others. Prepare the argument, with achievements, experiences, reference cases, data, … The objective is not to publicize your career, but to know how it can respond to the needs of the company.

la entrevista - conocer la empresa

GET TO KNOW THE EMPLOYER

Carry out some research and analyse key information about the company and the job description of the vacancy. Use all the means (company website, news, search engines, …), ask people who may know, … The information should help you better understand your interviewer and support your answers, demonstrating a certain level of knowledge. Your interviewer will like to see that you are interested and have worried about knowing the company, but you have to avoid giving lessons, the interviewer knows the company much better.

la entrevista - respuestas

PREPARE ANSWERS AND ARGUMENTATIONS

In every professional career there are peaks and valleys, light and dark. The interviewer knows this and will try to find them. You must be prepared to face them, clearly and convincingly. Neither success nor failure must be concealed, it must be explained. You must also prepare reasoned answers to ‘standard questions’ that are very likely to be asked (e.g. why did you spend so little time in this company? what specific achievements did you have at this stage? what do you consider to be your main areas of improvement? what would change in your company today?, …)

la entrevista - preguntas

PLAN SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT THE COMPANY AND THE POSITION

It is important to explore about topics that interest and concern us. In the first interviews of the selection process and especially with those interviewers with a higher decision-making power, you should always show a great interest and curiosity about the position, its content, span of responsibility, competencies, interrelation with other areas, development, … as well as about the company, its activity, plans and results. Prepare the questions you would like to ask before the interview.
What should be avoided, in the initial phases, are questions of personal bias, such as work schedule, salary, flexwork, … These questions will come naturally in due course.

At the interview

la entrevista - aspecto

TAKING CARE OF THE APPEARANCE AND CLOTHING
It is something that seems obvious, but we should not forget it. In each interview you have to take care of your appearance, personal hygiene and clothing. As far as possible we must transmit the image that best suits our employer, without changing our style. Take care of the hairstyle, do not wear perfume, … show yourself how you like to look to others.

la entrevista - puntualidad

TIMELINESS AND COURTESY
Arrive neither late nor early. If the interview is at 6pm, make sure you are going to arrive a few minutes early. Be natural, act with professional courtesy. Always greet with a handshake, unless the interlocutor acts differently. Take off your coat, scarf, etc. When you are inside the room and, if you are sitting, maintain a suitable posture and always get up to greet or dismiss your interlocutor.

la entrevista - actitud

POSITIVE AND EMPATHIC ATTITUDE
We all like positive and enthusiastic people. So this is how you should show yourself, after all, you are in the interview because you are open to a change for the better. Be natural in the ways and in your responses. Do not exaggerate; do not be too nice or suspicious or inaccessible. Speak calmly, listening carefully to the interviewer and nod, leaving spaces between interventions. Use professional language; do not take confidence (even if you feel you are invited to it).

la entrevista - respuestas concisas

CONCRETE AND PRECISE ANSWERS
To each question, a clear and limited answer must be given, avoiding repetition and worthless information. Except for exceptions, do not spend more than 3 minutes on each answer or argument. When you do not understand the question, do not hesitate to ask the interviewer to ask it again or clarify it. Remember that ‘the interviewer din not express badly’, it is oneself who ‘has not understood correctly’.

la entrevista - thank-you

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND INTEREST
At the end of the interview, you must always thank the interviewer for the time you have spent, the company’s interest in your profile and your willingness to comment or clarify any other issue that may arise or to hold new interviews. If you are interested in the process, never show your dissatisfaction with the type of interview or time it is taking.

After the interview

la entrevista - mail

SEND A THANK YOU EMAIL TO THE INTERVIEWER
A reminder and thank you message will always be welcome the day after the interview, preferably by email. Reiterate in it your satisfaction with the process, appreciation and interest, and your availability to provide any additional information that might be required.

la entrevista - headhunter

KEEP THE HEADHUNTER INFORMED
Do not miss the opportunity to give feedback to the Headhunter who has presented you to the position on the interview held. The opinion of the Headhunter will give you a lot of information and your feedback will help them manage your application and interests with the employing company.

la entrevista - hombre mano alzada

AT THE END OF THE PROCESS DO NOT FORGET ANYONE
Whether the result has been positive or not, do not forget to send a ‘thank you’ email and to keep in touch with the people involved in the process. Many of the opportunities that are not closed today will return tomorrow. Caring for your reputation is key throughout your career.
